Working Pantry Ideas & Design

As custom home builders in the greater Cincinnati area, The Leland Group has decades of experience designing gorgeous functional kitchens in our residential and remodeling construction. As with every room in houses we design and build, we have multiple conversations with our clients regarding how they want to utilize the space. Here we go into detail regarding pantry designs and ideas.

The most important function of a pantry is to have room for all necessary storage. As pantries typically include cabinets, our cabinet designer usually designs the pantry. We discuss specifics with the client about what items they want to store, including food, spices, table linens, wine, paper products, etc. We design their custom pantry ensuring space for all those items the client wishes to store, in the most efficient, functional, and visually attractive pantry space.

Basic shelving in a pantry provides only the bare necessity for open storage. It does not maximize or organize your space; and is less visually appealing than a pantry designed for maximum functionality in keeping with your kitchen design. Your pantry should provide good visibility of stored items, and the ability to remove items without the necessity of moving other things out of the way.

Pantries should be located near food prep areas, as the primary role of a pantry is to store food and kitchen resources conveniently. Pantries can be one of the most popular spaces in modern home design. They can range from cabinet storage rooms to an informal dining area with room for a small table for casual meals. They can include prep sinks, refrigerators, wine storage, and much more. Open shelving within the pantry can match cabinet finishes for visual appeal.

A great, functional pantry will keep kitchens free of clutter. This is particularly important in modern house design, as open concept homes with increased kitchen visibility are negatively impacted by disorganized clutter. Pantries are a very important part of any kitchen design, and are elevated from mere storerooms to visually appealing spaces reflecting the quality and design of the overall kitchen.

Design elements for pantry spaces should include deep drawers to store large pots and pans. Decorative pantry doors with glass inlays are very appealing, as are pantry doors designed with the same material as kitchen cabinets, so that the pantry door appears to be a cabinet. This is referred to as an integrated door. Pantries are commonly utilized for storing occasionally used countertop appliances, such as stand mixers and food processors, if space for those items is not included in the kitchen area.

When our clients meet with our cabinet/pantry designer, they should know what they wish to store in their pantry. If you typically store a lot of dry goods such as snacks and canned products, you may wish to include shelving for visibility and easy access. Drawers that pull out provide excellent access to extra serving dishes and paper products. Varying shelf width and height can provide storage for larger items, maximizing your pantry space for convenience and functionality.
